Lerdahl and Jackendoff – A Generative Theory of Tonal Music
Fred Lerdahl and Ray Jackendoff, wrote a book A Generative Theory of Tonal Music, which has been cited by many cognitive science professionals as a cornerstone for music musical discussion. I found the ideas of how music is perceived and broken down into sections very interesting as it could give an explanation to why and how I would break down a music composition to perform and/or teach it to others.
Lerdahl and Jackendoff come from different professional backgrounds. Fred Lerdahl’s background includes being trained as a professional musician and current professor. Ray Jackendoff’s background includes being trained in a linguistic background and also being a professional musician. I think it is interesting to learn something about individuals, when you learn about their theories, so I have encluded several links for your enjoyment.
